Transnormativity is either the normalization and visibility of diverse transgender experiences or the pressure for transgender people to conform to a cissexist idea of what is “normal.”

What does transnormativity mean?
Transnormativity has two related uses. It can describe efforts to normalize the existence of diverse transgender people and experiences, including bringing the ordinary aspects of trans people’s lives into public awareness.
It can also refer critically to the assumption that transgender people should fit a cissexist model of what is considered normal, along with the pressure placed on them to do so. In this sense, transnormativity concerns the regulation of trans bodies and identities through expectations about acceptable or recognizable transgender lives.
How the term is used
The term appears in discussions of transgender representation, media inclusion, and the medicalization or regulation of trans bodies. It may describe both the increased visibility of trans lives and the norms that shape which forms of transgender experience are treated as acceptable or legible.
